Season 4, Episode 4 “Future Tense”

By Janes

When I first watched this episode at fourteen years old, I didn’t enjoy it, because it was just too real. I didn’t want to watch these characters go through the awful college process–why would I need to, when I was already in the thick of it? But now that that’s all over, I really love these college-centric episodes. Although none of these teen shows really understood how the process worked, Dawson’s did a much better job than most of capturing the paralyzing uncertainty of this period (and the inherent stupidity of ubiquitous questions like “Where do you see yourself in five years?”). Plus… the return of Drunk Joey!! Continue reading →

Season Three, Episode 22 “The Anti-Prom”

By Janes

Screen Shot 2018-06-04 at 11.04.49 PM

Okay, yes, we’re going to get to the good stuff: True Love, the first gay kiss on network television, the cry face… but first–it’s the first prom episode of the series, guys!

Like actual proms, prom episodes are hotbeds for drama and hormonal teen hijinks (especially since they fortuitously happen in spring, right before the season finale), but also tend to be a little bit of a letdown. But among its many accomplishments, Dawson’s Creek can boast not one, but two classic prom episodes during its run, starting with the ultra-romantic, wonderfully melodramatic “The Anti-Prom.” Continue reading →

Season 3, Episode 16 “To Green With Love”

By Janes

We made it!!

We’re very excited about the next three episodes, if you couldn’t tell. But before we get to that series-altering (read: life-altering) moment, we need to get through “To Green With Love,” a racially awkward episode of television aptly named after a classic, racially awkward movie.

“Yay, black people! Now go away.”

Season 3, Episode 10 “First Encounters of the Close Kind”

By Janes

Screen Shot 2018-05-08 at 11.11.00 PM

“First Encounters of the Close Kind” is much better than I remembered. The whole time I was watching it, I was thinking, “This episode is tightly written, has a clear theme, and arguably has a more mature perspective on the characters than anything we’ve seen thus far. Why do I hardly ever rewatch it?” And then I remembered–no Pacey! Continue reading →

Season 3, Episode 4 “Home Movies”

By Janes

Screen Shot 2018-04-22 at 11.54.26 PM

That’s right, everyone… it’s the beginnings of True Love! The titular “home movies” are actually videos of Dawson and Joey being tiny soulmates, and yet this episode is primarily remembered for a few iconic scenes between Joey and Pacey. Their chemistry just won’t be denied.

In other news, the writers concoct such a father-son conflict so contrived, I actually find myself on Dawson’s side. I hate when that happens. Continue reading →

Season 2, Episode 21 “Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes”

By Nerdy Spice

Joey hugs Dawson from behind while Dawson crouches, in the middle of a dusty scene (mid-construction).

This episode chooses Dawson’s Creek’s favorite theme—people changing—and hammers it absolutely to death. Dawson’s final film assignment (and a highly unrealistic one, by the way, or at least one that indicates the high school is total crap – who gives a shit about drawing parallels to real life in a real film class?) is to compare a character arc from Casablanca to one from his own life. So basically, his plotline is itself a meta reference. Shot! Continue reading →

Season 2, Episode 16 “Be Careful What You Wish For”

By Janes

Screen Shot 2018-03-25 at 4.39.27 PM

Recapping these episodes was a strange experience. Between his hilarious drunk antics in 2×16 and his sweet supportive side coming out in “A Perfect Wedding,” Dawson was the most shockingly tolerable version of himself. It was… disconcerting. Continue reading →

Oscars 2018: What Will Win, What Should Win

Best Picture:

Call Me by Your Name
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Get Out
Lady Bird
Phantom Thread
The Post
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Will win: Shape of Water

Should win: Get Out

Since the Oscar voting uses a ranking system to pick the winner, the movie that wins won’t be the one loved by the most people, but the one liked or admired by the most people. This year, that’s definitely Shape of Water, a romantic fantasy with a well-realized director’s vision and a wonderful leading performance. It’s strange to call a fish-fucking film “Oscar bait,” but it is, in its way: auteur director, lead performance by a non-disabled person playing a disabled person, and a story that feels daring without actually challenging anyone’s worldview.

Season 2, Episode 10 “High-Risk Behavior”

By Janes

Image: Joey drawing Jack while he's naked with a towel on

The first part of a classic two-parter, “High-Risk Behavior” is the kind of episode that branded this show as “scandalous” and “sex-obsessed” in the 90s, but looks downright quaint in the post-Gossip Girl world. At the center of the episode we have the teen soap contrivance to end all teen soap contrivances: Jack ruins Joey’s figure drawing with his adorable clumsiness, and Joey just has to draw him in the nude.
