Oscars 2018: What Will Win, What Should Win

Best Picture:

Call Me by Your Name
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Get Out
Lady Bird
Phantom Thread
The Post
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Will win: Shape of Water

Should win: Get Out

Since the Oscar voting uses a ranking system to pick the winner, the movie that wins won’t be the one loved by the most people, but the one liked or admired by the most people. This year, that’s definitely Shape of Water, a romantic fantasy with a well-realized director’s vision and a wonderful leading performance. It’s strange to call a fish-fucking film “Oscar bait,” but it is, in its way: auteur director, lead performance by a non-disabled person playing a disabled person, and a story that feels daring without actually challenging anyone’s worldview.

The Great Dawson’s Creek Rewatch Project: Season 2, Episodes 10-12

We’re rewatching all of Dawson’s Creek in honor of its twentieth anniversary, and we’ve updated our drinking game rules! The full list can be found here.

Season 2, Episode 10 “High-Risk Behavior”

By Janes

The first part of a classic two-parter, “High-Risk Behavior” is the kind of episode that branded this show as “scandalous” and “sex-obsessed” in the 90s, but looks downright quaint in the post-Gossip Girl world. At the center of the episode we have the teen soap contrivance to end all teen soap contrivances: Jack ruins Joey’s figure drawing with his adorable clumsiness, and Joey just has to draw him in the nude. Dawson’s Creek Drinking Game Rules: An Update

We’re a season and a half into our Dawson’s Creek Rewatch Project, and our drinking game rules have been serving us very well. (Our entries have ranged from zero to a whopping 29!) However, they were mostly written with the first season in mind, so here are a few updates for upcoming episodes:

1 shot for every vintage Jen Lindley pity party

1 shot for anyone slut-shaming Jen when she hasn’t had sex for 5 or more episodes

2 shots for every time Joey expresses abject terror at the thought of having sex (been there, sister) Continue reading →

Carrie's angry face is seen from below, with messy hair and an intense expression, against a dark interior background.

Homeland Recap: 7×02 “Rebel Rebel”

The previouslies still don’t include Quinn—but the credits now contain snippets of him, both audio and visual, which I find interesting. Including something about him saying for her to think of him as a beacon–which I don’t think we’ve seen yet, so maybe we’re in for a posthumous letter from Quinn? Another one? Also, at least half of the snippets in the credits involve Carrie’s condition rather than the political/spying-related stuff.

The Great Dawson’s Creek Rewatch Project: Season 2, Episodes 4-6

We’re rewatching all of Dawson’s Creek in honor of its twentieth anniversary. Will require some mind-numbing. Drinking game rules can be found here.

Season 2, Episode 4 “Tamara’s Return”

By Janes

So… I was definitely dreading recapping this episode. The worst thing to happen to the show (which the creator gamely stands by to this day) is back. I know the term “witch” is being reclaimed by feminists right now and I love it, but by the end of this episode I’m just like “Ding, dong, the witch is dead!” Continue reading →

Season 2, Episode 1 “The Kiss”

By Nerdy Spice

Joey and Dawson stare at each other, immediately post-kiss.

In this episode, as you may guess from the title, Dawson and Joey are NOT READY to be cool about the fact that they’ve kissed. [In the first scene alone, they go back and forth about whether to treat the kiss like a thing a total of three times. – Janes] They spend most of the episode completely freaking out, under the theory that second kisses are even more important than first kisses. And whenever they’re not freaking out, they’re indulging in their new favorite activity: coming up with cheesy yet disgusting ways to declare that they’re sexually attracted to each other–while exhibiting a complete lack of actual chemistry. The double entendres (well, they’re really just single entendres accompanied by leering and eyebrow wiggles) fly as thick as the polysyllabic words.

Season One, Episode 10 “Double Date”

By Janes

Screen Shot 2018-01-11 at 9.19.11 PM

We open with Dawson complaining about how much he’s pining after Jen. Did I accidentally replay the previous episode? No, the writers are just pretending that Dawson never made out with Carol and started to get over Jen, because they need him to be a weird stalker ex for this episode to work. Continue reading →
